Dar es Salaam is the largest city and the political and economic capital of Tanzania.
Located in a quiet bay off the Indian Ocean coast, the city has grown in economic importance to become a prosperous centre of the entire East African region. Its active harbor is the main port in Tanzania. It is the gate way to Zanzibar Island, Feel like taking a trip to the lovely Island of Zanzibar? Why not? The ferry picks you up at the Harbor, located by Forodhani Primary school, and drops you off, in Zanzibar. How long does a trip like this take you ask? Try it’s about 2 hours by speed boat/ferry, but you will be guaranteed that those hours are worth it. Give it a try and you won’t regret it. Enjoy!
Also it’s the starting point for many safaris to the Southern circuit tour sites, Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi National Park, Ruaha National Park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Mahale Mountains National Park, Gombe stream National Park and Katavi National Park.
Dar-es-Salaam is industrial area produces products for export and use throughout the country. Government offices all have their main base in Dar es Salaam, and diplomatic missions and non-governmental organizations in the country all have a presence in the bustling urban city.
The main sights are the remnants of colonial presence, both German and British, can still be seen in the landmarks and architecture around the city. The university is found on the hills (Mlimani) Northwest of the city centre in what was once a rural setting but is now encircled by the city, with a modern shopping complex center (Mlimani city).
About 10 km from the city centre along the road to Bagamoyo you will find the National Museum, the Village Museum, and the very colorful Kariakoo markets as well as Kivukoni fish markets are well worth a visit. Numerous s historical landmarks, including St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the White Father’s Mission House, the Botanical Gardens, and the old State House make for an interesting walking tour around the waterfront and city centre.
The best beach close to the capital is Oyster Bay. Other beaches, with better security, are found further north along the coast. The South Coast is also being developed and has nice beaches.
Dar-es-Salaam like other beaches in Tanzania has beautiful sand clean water beach.
Seven kilometres north of the city, to Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve offers good snorkelling and diving sites for those who want to explore the water. The reserve boasts beautiful beaches, secluded islands, and many varieties of marine species. Although the variety and population of coral and fish species are not as numerous as other sites on Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Island, the Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve is well worth a visit and is a great way to spend a day out and see the coast.
